PP General Executive Meeting Notes

Event: General Meeting of Pennies with Purpose (Temporary title, PP hereafter)

Date: September 19, 2009 5 p.m. – 10 p.m. Location: Jonathan’s Place



1) Meeting notes of the PP general executive meeting (September 19, 2009)

- Discussion of mission and organizational structure


- Discussion of future plans for the PP


- Setting date and agenda for next meeting

- Counting coins of all members : Total amount of pennies collected $ 165.12



2) Meeting notes



i) Mission statement should be amended and clarified

- Alla will distribute an updated mission statement draft through e-mail

- Other members will review and add their inputs through e-mail exchange

- We will finalize the statement at the next meeting, October 3rd, 2009



ii) Short-term goal and long-term goal should be clarified

- Short term goal: specific year plan and goal for project such as the targeting group and fundraising group

- Long term goal: basic roadmap for the PP ranging multiple years such as philosophical direction, logic model, and strategy



iii) Establishment of logic model is necessary

- In next meeting, the PP will consider the details of logic model PP is pursuing



iv) Election and appointment of positions in executive member

- Vice President: Khurram

- Director of PR/Treasure: Aya

- Secretary: Alla

- Co-director of Treasure: Fangzhi

- The PP will have two types of members:

Executive members

General members or donors



v) Determining the main principles and philosophy of the PP

- Starting from small pennies and aiming at big cause, which is distinctive from other existing fundraising movements

- PP only requests and accepts less than a dollar—coins

- PP more focuses on increasing the number of participating people, rather than on increasing the amount of accumulated money itself.

- PP will help children who are under the age of 15

- In principle, the PP will send pencil and notebooks. However, the PP will keep the flexibility based on the need of the recipient groups



vi) Legal framework and issues should be considered

- PP has to review and discuss legal issues

- Jonathan will consult with experts on nonprofit law and management

- Transparent management including issuance of receipts is necessary

Jonathan has to discuss this issue with treasury team



vii) Where to start the activities

- First option: Kakenya’s Dream-Building a new future for the girls of Kenya

a. The Kakenya Center for Excellence: serving the most vulnerable underprivileged Maasai girls in Kenya. The Kakenya Center for Excellence will enroll 150 students in grades four to eight—ages 8 to 14 è Jonathan’s comment: This fits PP’s initial principle.

b. Contact: Kakenya, University of Pittsburgh student from Kenya, expected to receive a doctorate in education in May 2009.

c. Usage of money

Complete the Construction of the Kakenya Center for Excellence School Building

Pay for a Girl's annual school fees (including room & board)

Provide school supplies & Quality Academic Texts to a School Classroom

Employ Passionate Teachers & Administrators to Design & Implement a Quality School Curriculum

f. Aya will contact Kakenya and discuss the way to cooperate together



- Second option: Helping kids’ education in Pittsburgh community

a. Unless the first option work as the PP intended, the PP will connect the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank (GPCFB, hereafter).

b. Contact : Jessy, a public school teacher at the Duquesne School District

c. Jessy has been committed to helping students and working together with Food Bank. She has been calling for supports for kids in her school.

d. First option doesn’t work as the PP intended, Jonathan will contact Jessy via Lisa and Ann in GPCFB



viii) Other issues

- Activities material needed

Name tag for managing donors and their pennies donated

Safe container/ Jars/ Bottles/ Cans

- At the next meeting, all executive members will bring some jars or bottles to contain coins

- Hand sanitizer for using in the process of coin counting



ix) Setting the date for next meeting

- Saturday, October 3rd, 2009. 2 p.m.

- Kevin’s place

- Aya’s and Khurram’s birthday party will follow, and this birthday party will be another event for the PP’s fundraising initiative

Coin counting and discussion meeting

We will have a coin counting and discussion meeting for 'Pennies with Purpose' on September 19th, 2009.

* Place: Jonathan's place
* When: Saturday, September 19th, 2009, 5 p.m.
* Agenda:
i) we will count all coins we have collected so far from our members.
ii) discuss the use of the coin and plan of the group activities.
*** Jonathan will treat Healthy Seafood Ramen (Korean Noodle) on Saturday.
